Batam . Batamindo . Latrade

Caroline Yeoh (BGS Prof) organized a trip for us to Batam to better understand the business conditions over at Batam..it was my first time to batam really..though its hard to believe…since its so near Singapore..but yeap..haha..

Had to get up really early as our ferry was at 8.30..sigh..i hate getting up early..but luckily..NEL travels to harbour front..so not much of an issue..after we checked ourselves in..we started to board the ferry n dats where the guys all started to sigh… “Penguin ferry????...oh no…” lol..Penguin happens to be the same contractor dat is responsible for shipping soldiers to Pulau Tekong durin our army days..oh well..who could blame them..or rather..us..haha..

I managed to catch the view of Singapore from ashore n I hav to say..no wonder ppl said Singapore is a beautiful island..cos..it is..haha..esp when the ferry passes by sentosa’s Siloso beach where bikini babes r playin volley ball..haha…so jus how can u not say it is beautiful..lol..

Played daidee on board n took loads of pictures…n when we finally got bored..we tried to throw sentill overboard..dats where we realized its impossible..haha..esp when the boat is always tilted to the side where Sentill is at..kee kee kee..so we went ard takin pic of ppl slpin..hm..hm..hm…

Caroline Yeoh joined us at the top deck n we had a nice chat..den she left the presents left for the CEOs with us..which is when I wondered..(Refer to pic below)..we r goin to a muslim c’try..n the best gift to give them is… … …U.S pork???? Lol..but dat was onli the bag..haha..but still..maybe not the best??...

Someone asked me on board..if I had a girlfriend and that I looked like someone who has many girlfriends..sigh..y does no one believe me??..i am how available can..hahaha..

The journey was short..abt..45 mins?..or there about..

When we arrived..it was scorchin hot..i jus wanted to be indoors..haha..we had to quickly load up coaches n got goin to Batamindo..where we met up with the management of the industrial park n visited many other firms..they’ve got pretty ‘interestin’ labour laws over there..if a particular Indonesian is a full time staff in ur company and he one day decides to quit…u as the company..will hav to compensate him/her on his/her decision to quit. N I’m like..huh…wats the rationale man..haha..they r way over protective..which is y no local will ever get a perm position in the firms there..Singapore companies aint stupid..we jus work ard it..so all the locals employed there were on contract basis.

I hav to sae the CEOs frm various companies were open to say the least..answerin all the qns we had to post..afterall SMU undergrads r known to be armed with questions n comments..which sometimes come bac to haunt us..After a few firms..we headed to a seafood restaurant to hav our lunch..yum yum…black pepper crabs..fried prawns..kang gong..sotongs..n my giant coconut!!..haha..but our international frens were not comfortable though..many did not eat much seafood bac in their c’try..esp Vikrant who was beside me..had to hypnotize himself to try some seafood..n he told me… “u know..bac in India..we’re not such big fans of seafood”…lol..n we had ppl from france as well..they din seem comfortable with anything..guess it’s the first time they’re at a more typical Asian nation. Singapore..is not quite the same as over there..haha..

In the afternoon..we went to the Kings factory..n nono…its not the Ice Cream one…haha..its the shoemaker..who produces most of the industrial shoes used in the market in spore..labour laws there states that workers shud be released by 5pm..such gd life..n by 4.40pm..everyone was packin up..by 4.55pm…everyone was queuing to clock their time out..who says we’re calculative on work hours?..they r worse..haha..

N at abt the same time..we headed to the coach cos we were to leave for a shoppin mall..which I cant rem the name..haha..n the workers there were starrin at us like we were some Alien..sigh..we..were onli walkin..y r SMU ppl always targeted?..haha..

After the mall..we headed to the Kelong owned by CEO of Latrade Mr Zhang. Mr Zhang happened to be on the same tour group as my family was when we went to Taiwan..haha..the world is small..n I bump into him whenever I leave the ctry..maybe we can work some business deals out..haha..he’s the one who was restin his hands on me in the pic below.

Hm..wonder if he wans to have a god son..haha..

His kelong looked ordinary frm the outside..except that its big..but when u get to the inside…it is a diff story..haha..it was like he was runnin a chalet..he had 40 over rooms..and even had signs to direct ppl to rooms..n in his kelong..he has a real ktv room..movie theatres..pool tables..ping pong..satellite tv..and a bar..he usually uses those room to entertain potential tenants at Latrade. He even offered me n sentill 2 bottles of chivas (18 years)..which we shyly declined..damn..y did we..haha..

His room had a really nice view of the sea..n it showed u..jus how success can get u to enjoy life..n he started with limited money n no degree..Mr Zhang also planned for a BBQ seafood buffet for us..yum yum..haha..n when things r freeflow..Sentill gets flowin..look at the amount of food he’s eaten..along with weiyuan (we usually call him wei ge..lol)..

We had a long nite..but it was a long nite of fun of cos..haha..n our dear fren Wan Yi..proved jus y everybody calls her blur when we played daidee..we were playin 5-cards..n she came out with.. ‘4-5-6-7-9’…n I was left starrin at the card for some 3 seconds..n ask her..r u sure u can put dat?...n she took even longer to realize it..haha..it was 3.30am in the morn..but still…liew..blur le..lol…

When dawn broke..we showered n headed to the dining hall for breakfast..n nasi lemak was served…goodness..the chef serves fantastic nasi lemaks..yum yum yum..still makes my mouth water..haha..after breakfast…we headed to the mall for some more shoppin..where they had alrite lookin t-shirts goin for $9 per piece..yup..birds we become.. “cheap-cheap”..

N they still had A&W!!..long time no see..haha..tink there’s onli one or 2 left in Singapore..or none..not veri sure..n I had curly fries after curly fries..yummy..

We took off for Singapore by noon..n b4 den..everyone went to J.co n left with some 4 boxes of donuts each..haha..which we all devoured on the ferry bac..sinful..n gym beggin..

Waikiki

Prior to the week of Batam and Waikiki..i’ve nv been to Vivocity..jus too busy really..n this week..i find myself there 3 days in a row..liew..revenge sia..thurs morn was there..cos was to take ferry from habourfront..fri was there..cos came bac frm batam..sat was there..cos..needed to cross to sentosa for Waikiki..haha..so..3 days in a row..

Sentill signed me up for so many events dat I really doubted we would hav time to play all…in the end…we had a walkover for handball as we were basically too tied up in beach soccer and pushball..

I scored 3 goals that day in beach soccer..failing to score in onli one match..but sadly..dat was not enough to see us thru to win the tournament..but its alrite..i’m proud of my divin header where I threw myself at a cross..headed the ball against the post..clattered into the keeper..n deflected the ball bac into the goal..without me knowin..haha..its still a divin header rite..haha..

I also scored one from half way line..since we were always pressed bac n the keeper was out of his line..i jus had to try..a gamble dat paid off..

wat can I say?..a shark dat smelled blood..haha..i remain..the goal poacher I always am..

But the weather wasn’t to be at the end of the day as it started to pour at ard 5pm..dats where we decided to pack up..wash up..n leave..haha.. headed bac to main island n had dinner at vivo..realli tired when it ended..wat a packed term break..

Lunch with CEO, Capitaland ILAC, Mr Wong Shean Fine

CEO talks r aplenty when u come to SMU..n I had the privilege of attendin e talk by Mr Wong Shean Fine, CEO of Capitaland ILac..the division responsible for created the IR proposal..their proposal in my opinion was way superior than the one being proposed by Genting as genting was merely goin to copy universal studios’ concepts. The governments’ guideline was to create something out of this world..a first in the world..n a concept full of innovation..

Afterall..it is the govt’s goal to put Singapore on the world map of tourism..n to achieve a one of its kind status..the govt went to opt for.. .. …a copycat..reconstructing whatever other universal studios had…a rationale I can never understand. Is it an attempt to boost ties with Malaysia?..i dunno..but wat I do know is that ILAC’s proposal will not jus sit there on its own..its goin to go places..n true enuff…the govt has asked them on the possibility of building it elsewhere other than on Sentosa. Meaning to say we might hav a third IR..hm…all of a sudden..

ILAC’s proposal was based on the theme of Aquatic Life. I am not a gd salesman of the proj but it has a lot of robotics in it..they secured the services of the creators of the robotics who made movies ‘Free Willy’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ possible. Visitors will be able to swim with ‘free willy’ and other cartoon characters and the sea creatures can even imitate your moves in water..how cool!..if u shake ur head..the dolphin will shake her’s..

And they will also educate on the history of Aquatic life..n include the evolution of the creatures and also how future creatures will look like..with mutation n further evolution. U can even create ur own virtual sea creatures n hav it fight with someone else’s in their virtual arena..

You will also be wearin tags where a central computer will keep track of the places u have gone to and when u pass by robotics…they would ask u whether u liked ur previous visit to dat certain shop..ultra cool..haha..

They hav a lot of other features as well…coral riffs n stuff..jus too many to name..even the outlook of the premise is cool…but like I said..i’m not a good salesman on this one..but at the end of the day..Universal studios are makers of amusement parks..jus how their franchise system is more creative and ‘first in the world’ really remains to be seen.

I jus hope I get to see Capitaland ILAC’s proposal put into construction. But meanwhile..it is toast to the CEO and swallowing unagi at sun dining (e place where they serve steak at SGD98 per serving and which my lunch was claimed 100% from SMU..lol).

Out of Black Angelica

Alvin got in touch and started hanging out with a producer which traveled with the best rock bands out there..like Muse etc..he heard some originals of Black Angelica and liked it. Wanted e band to work on a full band version of the demos and sent it to him. Purpose of it was so that he could send the band to international music fests…places where a lot of bands get signed up by labels to become professional bands…and he inspired Alvin a lot esp in seein wat to do next with his life.

Alvin fell dat he had this big void within him ever since his dad passed away. And since den..he’s been searchin for the reason he exist and he feels he has finally found it. N he did not wan to waste any more time and wanted to go push the band as far as it could go. Dats y he spoke to every member abt it n was sayin dat everyone will really have to commit to the band now if we wan to take it further. Those dat r schoolin r willing to quit the sch for the band..

After letting me know the circumstance..he asked if I wanted to be part of it..for serious..n we trashed things out..to be honest I thot of this prob b4..if the opportunity came..will I take it..afterall I hav planned for a lot of things to take place..if not life would be meaningless..n finally I decided that I would not be a permanent fixture in the band..somehow I jus did not feel it was my calling..i felt that maybe my calling was in business instead.

I mean I find myself more willing to sacrifice work to develop biz plans than to go for band prac. I still go for jamming sessions..but I dun tink of the band all the time. But I do tink abt business..which is probably y I’m in talks with SMU Business Innovation Generator (SMUBIG) abt potential start ups. Although it is still a distant thing to be funded by the sch for now but I am goin to try to push it further.

The bottom line was I had many plans n commitments already..not jus biz..although I still love playin in a band..not to forget I spend 3 yrs in poly tryin veri hard to be in the top 5% to 7% jus so I could get a place in a local university..

Moreover..although I thot of buyin a new guitar for some time..instead of spending my cash on it..i spend my money enrollin into Wealth Academy which was about investments and ebiz…n I had little qualms dat it was the better choice..so dats y I thot..maybe business is where my passion really lies..

but u know..life is filled with tough decisions..but u live to do wat u love..or life would be such a chore. I hav a fren who jus graduated from SIM and gotten an events mgt job which pays like 1.5k/mth. But my reaction was..hey..if its wat u love..go for it..i mean..who cant get 1.5k these days..buts its abt being true to urself..doin wat u love..seein the big pic in life..n I salute that..

my parents r worried at times abt me..i mean they always hav..cos..i’m nv with the norms..lol..since young I was a reject..failin everythin..n they got worried I cant graduate..n den when I gotten sensible n worked my way to uni..i got them worried again cos I dun wanna work..haha..i dun wanna work for anybody in the long run.

They are like “y do u wanna take the risk?..u r in SMU biz (Top Biz sch in the nation) rite..ur top graduates r earnin a startin pay of SGD 8k-12k/mth..top 20% is SGD 4.8k/mth n above..even if u’r average..u would get 2.9k/mth…jus study harder..”

N I have 20 million objections to dat..first of all..GPA ≠ starting pay. Its no longer abt grades..stop payin so much attention to grades…Income ≠ pay. Getting a job is not the onli way to hav income..n yet again..its abt ur interest u know..always rem the big picture..i will stand by my dream..haha..

So I guess I’m lookin for a new band now..Mervyn (Poster boy for SMU) is interested in becoming e vocalist in my new band n I have someone interested in becumin e band’s drummer..need a bassist now..n may rope in a second guitarist..shall see how..but yeah..guess it stands..i’m out of Black Angelica..btw..i nv agreed to the band name…haha..sounds so metal..

Performing @ Handicaps Welfare Association

Despite still being sick..i went to perform at the Handicaps Welfare Association as part of alvin’s LTB proj..felt like sh*t on that sat morn really..but ya know..i’ve already made e promise to perform..n more imptly..its for the handicapped and disabled..so I couldn’t see myself backing out..

When I got there..i was pretty shocked to see the premises as it was really quite run down..and it’s a fairly reputable organization..i really wish the govt would do something abt it..it will definitely be one of the organizations I will be givin bac to financially once I make more money…they deserve better..

Alvin’s team repainted and refurnished wat used to be a store room and revamped it into a recreational room..where the handicapped could indulge into a game of pool. Viewin their determination in life and their persistence for greater living and better self-being..it reminded me that many things in life are very much a state mind. There are already an unlimited list of miracles and examples of people who really fought for wat they wanted and wat they believed and eventually achieving it.

4 more days to the end of exams..dat explains my lack of post once again..will be posting veri soon..veri veri soon..haha..but I have to clear my 4 papers first..sigh..pls dun say "who ask you act smart take 6 mods this sem.."..i was pre-assigned..no acting smart on my part..haha..6 mods..shouldnt be happenin in university..much less SMU..

SA Week

More back dating…On the veri same day that weije (my bro) enlisted, Black Angelica was scheduled to play at SA week..n we onli had one rehearsal prior to the performance due to heavy schedule of all band mates..nonetheless..we were ready..wat to say?..i was workin with some great musicians esp romey..the band’s lead guitarist that shreds like mad on his guitar..

The performance was scheduled to be in campus green (where the big tree is at)..whereby the vehicles that passed by SMU will be able to see the bands perform..but e weather wasn’t to be and it had to be shifted to the T-junction at the basement..man..would hav loved to play in the open instead..its jus so much more fun..plus I’ve played at the T-junc before..but well…rain happens..

Checkin out the set before performing

Chillin chillin chillin..

Due to the rain and the changing of location, all the performances were pushed bac..and we played at 7pm instead of 6..

I’m not sure who came up with the plan to let us do sound check onli jus b4 our performance cos the crowd were settled in after the first band..n to see musicians set up jus dun cut it..to make it worse..the crew din know wat they were doin when they failed to channel the output from my fender amp into the PA system..but we were up n runnin in abt 5 to 7 mins..

The first song we played was Yellow..romey was supposed to play a riff from ‘sweet child o mine’..to blend into the song..we felt it sounded great..but..hm..he jus..forgot..haha..but I felt we should hav kicked off with other songs..cos we had hipper songs in the set..nonetheless..we moved on to ‘Are you gonna be my girl’ by Jet which set the tempo for the rest of the set…it was a fun song to jam really..n pretty catchy..plus it was a top 40 hit..so the crowd were familiar with it..

we went on to play Mr. Brightside – The Killers, here without you – 3 doors down, Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol (ever present song) and lastly Time is Running Out by Muse.

Alvin jumped off stage to the crowd during ‘Chasing Cars’ as it was a song that everyone knew..n could sing along..so he went down to pass the mic ard. That remains our signature song..after all this time..n I still hav no idea y Alvin love to call it chasing dragons..n starts laughin on his own..*pretends to laugh*..so funny~.. -_-‘ lol…

On our last song…Romey jumped off stage to go show off his guitar skills which really ‘aww’ the crowd..we were supposed to end it in another way..but he somehow forgot abt it too..n went on n on ..n on..n on..leavin Tim, Brandon n me lookin at each other..cos we were wondering when we could stop playin..lol..the Solos will sound like shit without the bass, drums n rhythm guitar..but somehow..we could gather when we should end..

On the whole..it was fun really..playin in front of ppl is always a plus..n i hav to thank everyone that came down to support us..Cookiemon!!..Jason..adit..Su xian..ryan..ryan’s gf..sentill..shirley..edmund..janice..jaye..rachel..all the SESS peeps dat were present dat nite..

Shareholders & Unethical Journalists

I have always understood the power that the press and journalist have on society on the whole and that Singapore has one of the most reliable and ethical journalists. I still hold that opinion, although I have to admit that even the most ethical can have its selfish side of the coin in order to stir reader volume.

For a gd few weeks, I kept my lips sealed about the situation surrounding the Isetan Saga that has seen the company make headlines in the news. I sincerely thank all those who have called and msged me to ask me abt the situation of the company and I hope that you would understand my position and reasons as to why I couldn’t disclose more than what the newspaper had to offer.

In compliance the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) Act and SGX guidelines, any share price sensitive information were not to be disclosed by employees of the company and their family members (which includes me) unless the information were made public. Now that the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) has ended, I can finally speak. Phew. I would not be surprised if my trading account were being double checked by Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) for any possible trading of Isetan shares under my name.

For my frens who did not know abt the incident, I’ll briefly summarize it. Basically, tax laws are set to change by end of 2007 which meant that shareholders will no longer be able to claim rebates on the dividends they were being taxed on (as that same dollar was taxed thru company tax already). As a result of this, the shareholders made a big whoo-ha and demanded the company to pay additional dividends this year in order for the shareholders to claim the tax credits. In my opinion, this is no more than an effort to ransom the company into distributing all available cash (estimated at S$60 Mil). The ones that actively led the protest were none other than the ones who never fail to make issues out of nothing at every AGM. If you analyze the financial statements of Isetan, you would realize that the demands have only got benefits for the shareholders and detrimental effects for the company.

As if demanding additional dividends were not enough, the few ‘rouge’ (this is the nicest word I can tink of) shareholders demanded that the non-executive directors be booted off the board as they failed to achieve maximum welfare for minority shareholders. I have seen the credentials of the rouge few and with all due respect, although there were even retired lecturers from NTU among the list, the job of non-executive directors IS NOT to take care of minority shareholders. And some of the issues they brought up in their petition only showed that they did not revise their knowledge on new accounting policies. (Even the students in SMU FA class know of the changes). To make things worse, they went on to imply that the Tan Brothers, 2 non-executive directors in the board, were corrupted and questioned their integrity and their place in the board.

I can only extend my sympathy to their family on the harassment they must have experienced. People say all kinds of things to get more money. Even ex NTU lecturers. I was really disappointed by their claims though it was not directed at my family (dad is executive director) but accusations of this sorts are nv nice to take.

Now that the EGM has ended, I am going to reveal the REAL agenda of the rouge shareholders. They already knew that replacing the non-executive directors were impossible as majority shareholder (Isetan Tokyo) have already stated their intent to block the move. They nonetheless made the effort to start a petition to have all minority shareholders to unite. Why would they spend so much effort to do something they know cannot be achieved?

This is because in the mist of all this whoo-ha, the share prices of Isetan has jumped out of the ordinary (Which the rouge few probably expected). And share prices would never be allowed to rise unless someone is selling it. (Guess who will be the first ones there to sell it at high prices). After the EGM was concluded, share prices dropped back to pre-hype levels and once again shares must be traded in order for the prices to go down. (Guess who will be there to buy back the shares now at a lower price).

I am aware that I have to watch what I say, but I am not naming any individual or stated groups. Neither am I a representer of the company..i am jus one member of the investing public..statin my independent views..with no relations to my dad..So…Drop the idea of suing me or my family…n get out of my face..

When the EGM was concluded, a journalist followed the board of directors to where they had lunch and snapped a photo of the board eating and labeled the photo ‘Lunch for Directors as shareholders continue to go hungry’. If I may, I would like you to consider the effects of such a statement or alternatively, attend BGS class in SMU to brush up on ur ethics. Please spare a thought for the people whom u seek to defame label as they are actually human beings with a life.

To conclude this saga,

Winner: Those who took advantage of other’s and sold shares at high prices

Loser: Everyone else (esp the defamed families and the poorly informed shareholders who bought at high prices)

Intelligence + Arrogance = Ignorance

I’ve always updated my life..jus not online..haha..cos on the bus home is where I hav the time to really record wat goes on in my ever hectic schedule..Its was week 5 and I’ve found life this sem to be extremely different from last. Last sem was much more relaxing and I had more time to play guitar and stuff. This sem, I hav to make an effort to play regularly. Such a contrast. But I might as well do. I somehow find myself doin work every single day..not like I had a choice (by force of endless assignments) but I’ve also told myself to buck up this sem..

Not that last sem was bad..actually it wasn’t at all..especially considerin the effort that I’ve put in (what effort?)..finishin above average with pretty decent grades was something I really didn’t deserve. I feel that everythin I hav now is because of the effort I’ve put in in the past..from the reason y I’m in SMU to how I managed to score for Financial Accounting…they were all due to hard work from the past. If I keep dependin on my past effort, I will get wiped out in smu in no time at all. Ppl r tinkin I muz be either veri hardworking or veri smart to hav came thru the poly..but in truth..i’m none..now..nv had the latter anyway..truthfully..i felt all my ex gfs were smarter than me..I jus wanted to get into uni more..thats all..

I feel that every ‘A’ I get without workin hard for it is like a Karma which will come bac n haunt me soon if I dun start earnin my grades..my parents even asked me to apply for scholarship since my current GPA qualifies for one..n I’m like…”r u mad????”…will nv get one la..esp when I’m so lazy now..

But this sem..other than not wantin to lose to others, I have other agendas that is pushin me on..i was in the car when I heard on news radio 93.8FM e other day..where they were discussin whether till todae, poly grads are still bein looked upon as 2^nd grade and lower class students. And the truth is…we still are..there were a few callers that said they hav frens that tink that way..n this female caller in particular strike my attention. She said that she told her principal in sec sch dat she wanted to go to a polytechnic even though her grades were gd enuff for JC..

And the principal immediately replied “WHAT FOR?? Any FOOL can make it in poly…” which immediately made me wonder if that particular principal has updated herself..on how much more people like Sim Wong Hoo is making than she was..there r talents in the poly..not sayin it jus cos I’m frm it..but dats the truth..

And to top matters, I’m aware that some minority in the SMU population share the same sentiments as well..even my then band frontman Alvin didn’t hav the nicest things to say about his proj mate n attributes it to the fact that he came from poly. I dunno how some ppl can make comments like this when they’re at the other end of the bell curve..the wrong end..that is..

These ppl reminds me of a phrase that was imprinted into me courtesy of Robert Kiyosaki. He said, many intelligent ppl end up unsuccessful because they were too full of themselves and were too arrogant to look ard for reality checks. They tink they know everythin n that they r invincible..and together, Intelligence + Arrogance = Ignorance where their ignorance get into their way of success.

And speakin of alvin..sometimes I tink he spends too much time on music..cos while his younger bro (currently in NYP | SIT) is dyin to come SMU..he is veri much makin a mess out of it..

When Clarence, as silver medalist from NYP (2^nd top student in cohort), couldn’t get a scholarship, I smelled that maybe we weren’t viewed on a fair ground..though I’m not one to be petty abt things..i’m not prepared to take this lyin down as well…

As such, I have made it a personal mission to maintain my GPA or at least remain above average..to prove that there is quality from the poly and also like my idol (adam khoo) urges me to do..to grab the ‘branded’ degree so that I can add a brand on myself…For once… (after being viewed as a misfit since young)
