Hey all,

Sorry for the lack of post..my net at home is down..n my laptop crashed..

its gonna be a while b4 i can realli sit down n blog..

lots of things happened recently..both good n bad..shall come bac with it soon!

Ciaoz...
Naval Open House

In my ever continuing bid to backtrack my life..i shall bring my post bac to the 25th May where I worked at the Naval Carnival. The carnival was a 3 day event stretching from fri to sun but i only worked on fri. Maybe thats a good thing though.

Cos just one day was enough to get me sun burnt pretty bad. Not that i haven been warned though..but a little sun just meant some more dosage of vitamin D.."always look on the bright side of life~.."

I roped in gary, ai jia, jenn, suet lay (jenn's fren), ryan, kok boon, sentill and weiyuan (who eventually failed to turn up..n din inform) to accompany me at the naval base.

The job officially starts at 9am but we were required to report by 7.15 at expo for transportation and briefing purpose. Which is why so many of my guys kept asking.."so why do we get paid only starting from 9??"..and i couldnt really offer any explanation especially when market practice elsewhere is to get paid for training sessions as well as briefing. But fortunately, they werent really the 'hard-to-deal-with' sort and eventually forgot abt it..

Submarine

Most of us arrived at around 7.20..and dats where i was contacted to liaise with the driver. i rem askin "so the bus driver is alreadi here?"..n the guy replied.."er..er...the driver is there alreadi.."
and later i found out the reason for his 'ers'. Cos while the driver is there..there were no bus!

Instead, we were required to ride at the back of a lorry.. -_-'..thats y he was reluctant. Lol. But its alright..i've rode on the back of many vehicles b4..lorries r nth new..haha..for me dat is..

we gave up the 2 front seats to jenn and suet lay cos...we were all so gentlemen..(esp. me..)..hee..

after we took off from expo..and joined the main road..another lorry was travelling beside ours..n there were Bangladesh workers at the back of it..n we were like "now we realli look like banglahs..." lol..

but hey..dun take anythin away from the Bangladesh workers..they build our houses..so dat we dun hav to..so i'm grateful..

after abt 15 mins..we were at the security checkpoint of the naval base..n a warrant officer saw us at the back and told the driver "oh..unloading ah??..uh!..go there! go there!"..n we were like.."oh..now we're cargoes...".."Banglahs to cargoes..Boys to Boxes"

we were den told to alight at the main stage area..and stood there for 5 mins without instructions..n den told to board the lorry again..to bring us on a 'tour' of the base where we made countless U-turns..gettin lost all over the place..n finally parkin at a carpark..so that we could all walk back to the main stage area... -_-''.

y we had to follow the lorry around?..i hav no idea..keep uncle companied..its lonely gettin lost alone...
we could hav jus waited at the stage area. oh well...it was a SAF event..as always..'The Decisive Force'...dat can nv decide on anything..

we were den issued T-shirts which had a wierd smell on it..but it din bother me dat much..though i am aware of the smell. We were hoping they were new shirts..which later we discovered..was not..cos they collected the shirts bac from us to reuse. And put it bac into the same black trash bag where we collected it from. Whether they wash the shirts or not..I dun wanna know..

after we changed..we were all allocated to different sections of the event. And i was allocated to look after the inflatable playgrounds and making sure that nobody were hurt. They told us to station one man at each playground..but there were onli 3 of the latter. So there were 2 extra guys..n we just spread ourselves as evenly as we can..like in the pic below..

There were no further instructions to us and just made sure that nobody got hurt. There was a guy who were in-charged of us all at that particular area of the site. I shall leave his name out..n name him, what sentill would call him, 'the hero'.

After stationin us..there were no instructions given..despite me continuing askin.."is there anythin or any numbers we should know?" We had to take initiative to ask the regulars around for what numbers to contact in case of emergency and in need of ambulance..(they had a couple of them on standby at the carnival)

n 15 mins later..hero returned with someone prob his supervisor..n since boss was around..he took liberty to come reprimand us and said.."guys! dun squeeze la!..so many in center!.." n lookin at our position..i dun see how we can go without being nucleated..go to the back of the playground and look at trees??? u cant see anything except from the front for the initial 3 playgrounds.

n gary was like.."act la..some ppl jus wanna act to be doin somethin in front of their boss.."..which is so SAF..although the event was ran by an external events company.

about 30 mins later..some crowds were in..n some regulars chatted with us..n passed us Navy lanyards for souvenir..n it would be rude to say no..so we took it. Hero soon returned to the scene and asked fiercely "WHERE DID YOU GET THIS FROM??"..n started scolding away.."It's company policy not to accept anything from client!!". Jus how do we know when u tell us nothing?? He then continued to complain about more things. "What is this in ur hand??(pointin to my camera)..you're here to work! not to take photos!!"

n just which eye of his has seen me take photo while there were work to do? The reason the camera is in my hands is becos the company provided no lockers or bag deposition points for their staffs n we had to take care of our own belongings. This is such a basic provision for events company. Just like water..which they didn't prepare enough to go around as well.

It is not our mistake that these things werent provided. Reprimand us for your own shortcomings. Very good. Blame everyone..blame everyone else. Everything happens for a reason. If things didn't go your way..take responsibility to find out why.

Talk about value reducers. Adam Khoo once told me that there are 3 kinds of ppl in a company
1. Value Creators (Create more value than he is paid for. e.g. if paid $4000, will clinch sale > $4000)
2. Value Sustainers (Deliver exactly the same value as he is paid for)
3. Value Reducers (Reduces the value of the company and is a liability)

The moment he gave no instructions...made ridiculous remarks and scolded me for everything..everyone dropped the working mentality. We all wanted to do a good job. I mean although the pay is not really high and we had to be in the sun, we were there to do a job and wanted to keep our promise.

But his management just puts all of us off that none of us wanted to work anymore. Ryan is a man of principles and determination. He too wanted to give him attitude back. When one person does such a bad job..n that one person can cause the 5 or 6 others to not wanna work...u have effectively reduced a lot of value in the company.

People who takes no responsibility for their own mistakes will never go far and will continue to reduce value every single day. And true enough..comfirmation were received when i heard he screwed up the day before the carnival as well. Everything and EVERYTHING happens for a reason.

I dun realli tink we were gei gao (calculative) ppl..some of us has worked for free b4..n were still happy..becos of the treatment and proper management. So if u can pay us..n we still get pissed..u r something..

But i wasn't that pissed really..just a little..its not easy to make me worked up..those around me can vouch..if i ever flared up at u..take heart to know that u'r one in a million..cos u muz have done it so many times I can't take anymore sh*t from you. Lol.

They look like little duckies..so cute

The children that were there at the playground cheered us all up realli. they were a joy to watch..and quite funny too! I took pics n videos on breaks..n they were so cute!Look at them play in the video.

SAF Regular's Decendents

The day got hotter and hotter and we had to go buy our own water since there was none going around by afternoon. Later in the day..we were told that we weren't supposed to buy things from the stalls either. No water provided..stationed us in the sun..no instructions to us not to buy from stalls...n den ask y we went to buy things from the stall. Once again..i cant stress enough..everything happens for a reason.

In the SAF..we either had unclear instructions..or conflicting instructions. There..we had NO instructions. When an organization's organizing is worse than SAF's..u can be sure that things r very wrong.

While helping clarence to collect his 'secrets of millionaire investors' from adam khoo's office dat day..i chatted with one of the staff there..and she said.."oh u'r from SMU..so u sure have name cards rite..."..n true enough i had some with me and we exchanged cards..

Many of us carry it with us..n exchange it when we work with outside parties. But that day..our cards were kept in the pocket. No intentions to give it out. Except to some of the JC gals who got bored and came to chat with me. They were there like the whole day..n had nth left to do or see.

~Thank you so much! *Hugs*~

The job was done by around 6 pm..instead of 7..n we took the shuttle out of the base to tanah merah MRT. Ever since that day..everyone has been calling me lobster..sigh..cos i was all red..including my arms. N peeling followed after a few days. Luckily it has mostly subsided..n i am no longer lobster boy..

The company left a pretty bad impression on us at the end of the day..(n i still haven got my pay as well)..and i'm gradually agreeing more on what many greats like Lee Kwan Yew says.."It takes forever to build a good reputation and 1 second to destroy it all".

I said that becos some of us worked that day not becos we had to. Some were merely killing time. One of us came from a rich family and drives a Mercedes to sch..n while i'm not sure what kind of business his family does..i do know which events company he would not be recommending to his dad should the business need an event.

Now..even spoil the brand name. Once again..value is further reduced..
